Human Resource Management, or HRM, is accepted as one of the most vital areas of business. Successful people management, effective recruitment and a knowledge of employment law are keystones to the successful running and development of any company, whatever its size. 

In this course, you will learn the skills involved in realising human potential and wellbeing in employment. Full-time students will apply these skills on an invaluable 15-day industry placement and part-time students can apply the theory and research that they learn to enhance organisational practice.

Effective human resource management is seen as being increasingly important in achieving business success and positively influencing the performance and wellbeing of employees. Our MSc Human Resource Management degree will enable you to make a significant contribution to people management practice and develop a deep understanding of the changing role of HRM in the development and implementation of employment policies and procedures. You will learn the specialist skills and expertise you need to be effective and influential in a human resources management role at both strategic and operational levels and acquire an in-depth understanding of key policy areas such as recruitment and selection, training and development, employee relations and performance management.

An invaluable three weeks of work experience will give you the opportunity to apply your learning and gain vital industry contacts.

Aimed at both newly qualified graduates and managers already working in the field of people management, as well as those who see their careers developing in this direction, the course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) as an advanced level qualification and provides you with the knowledge indicators required for membership of the CIPD.

This master’s course is located within the School of Management, part of our Business School. With an innovative network of academics and HRM practitioners employed in both business and research, we can provide a unique blend of expertise in human resource management, well-being and leadership practice. You'll have access to the people involved in leading edge of policy and theoretical developments in this ever-changing profession.

During this course, you'll develop valuable skills in people management, including the key areas of employee relations, employee development and employee resourcing. You will graduate with an advanced practical and theoretical understanding of all areas of HRM. Development of research abilities is also emphasised, and you'll learn techniques and strategies that will enable you to critically reflect on your workplace experiences, and create your own ongoing programme of professional development.

Part-time study

The number of modules studied is dependent on the exit that you wish to achieve, for example:

  • A Grad Cert is 60 Credits (3 modules)
  • A Cert HE/Grad Dip/ HND is 120 credits (6 modules)
  • A Dip HE credit is 240 credits (12 modules)
  • A Degree is 360 credits (18 modules)
  • An Honours Degree is 480 credits

Please note that some part-time courses give modular exemptions for previous study and vocational experience. Advice is available during application.
