Social Sciences offer an insight into many different aspects of our lives as individuals and as part of society. On this course you have the opportunity to study a range of social science disciplines including sociology, history, geography, psychology and politics. You will have the opportunity to learn about social scientific research on a range of subjects including Scottish cultural identity, environmental politics, childhood, domestic violence and employment.

With its wide range of subject matter, this course can carry you into areas as diverse as social care, teaching and financial services. It covers key areas of blend of psychology and sociology, and also takes in social aspects of geography, history, criminology and politics. Added to this is an extensive range of optional subjects.

Whether you complete the honours degree, or graduate after three years to progress to further studies in teacher training or social work, you'll leave with a comprehensive understanding of society, culture and human interaction.

The most important skill you'll acquire in this course is the ability to think critically and analytically. You'll learn to assimilate and interpret vastly differing viewpoints and information, developing them in the context of social theories and practices. Your communication and collaborative skills will be enhanced, as will your knowledge of social research methods.

Part-time study

The number of modules studied is dependent on the exit that you wish to achieve, for example:

  • A Grad Cert is 60 Credits (3 modules)
  • A Cert HE/Grad Dip/ HND is 120 credits (6 modules)
  • A Dip HE credit is 240 credits (12 modules)
  • A Degree is 360 credits (18 modules)
  • An Honours Degree is 480 credits

Please note that some part-time courses give modular exemptions for previous study and vocational experience. Advice is available during application.
