Combine the study of psychology and sociology in this uniquely flexible research based degree. Examine, investigate and understand human life and experience, developing a detailed understanding of the social world, relationships and social forces. After learning the foundations of each subject you’ll specialise, majoring in psychology or sociology, or study both equally for a joint honours degree. Psychology majors graduate with a British Psychological Society accredited degree and are eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartership, the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Combine the study of psychology and sociology in this uniquely flexible research based degree. You'll learn how to examine, investigate and understand human life and human experience from the perspective of these two related and fascinating disciplines. You'll develop a detailed understanding of the social world, relationships within it and the social forces that act on us all, knowledge that can be particularly useful to employers across all sectors.

After learning the foundations of both subjects you'll be given the opportunity to specialise in the area that interests you most. This can mean majoring in either subject, so you'll study more modules in one subject than the other. Or you can choose to study equal parts psychology and sociology and graduate with a joint honours degree.

If you choose to major in psychology you will graduate with a degree accredited by the British Psychological Society and be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR), the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

You'll develop a range of practical, intellectual, research and transferable skills including psychological and social research methods, group working, communication, critical thinking and problem solving. You'll also gain the skills to source, use and interpret information, design experiments and use related software.

Career prospects

Your broad knowledge of both sociology and psychology will open up a wide range of career opportunities. If you choose to major in psychology you may, after completing a postgraduate qualification, go on to find work in one of the specialist areas of psychology. 

Should you major in Sociology, you may choose to undertake research in areas such as sociology of health, or of the environment. Alternatively, you may prefer to enter postgraduate studies and explore more fully an area that was touched on in your degree course, such as computing or statistics. You may also choose specialist training in careers guidance, social work, teaching or human resource management.

Your direct-to-work path will most likely take you into the social and helping professions, with a wide range of options, from personnel manager to youth worker. You may also use your skills in areas such as marketing and market research, occupational therapy, sales, and personnel management.

The significant emphasis on research in this course equips you with the knowledge and skills required to continue on to postgraduate study, including possible PhD study within the school and a further academic career.

The number of modules studied is dependant on the exit that you wish to achieve, for example:

  • A Grad Cert is 60 Credits (3 modules)
  • A Cert HE/Grad Dip/ HND is 120 credits (6 modules)
  • A Dip HE credit is 240 credits (12 modules)
  • A Degree is 360 credits (18 modules)
  • An Honours Degree is 480 credits
