Property makes a major contribution to the economy and the capital invested in real estate has created demand for Chartered Surveyors with specialist skills in the development of property and the valuation and management of real estate.

The honours course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and you will not only graduate with an honours degree, but also with the means to achieve the highly regarded professional qualification of Chartered Surveyor once you enter the workplace.

Chartered Surveyors with degree in Property Development and Valuation apply their specialist skills in the field of development appraisal, valuation, agency (the buying and selling of land and property), real estate management, urban planning and environmental sustainability assessment.

This course combines property surveying with valuation, planning and development. It studies how commercial property markets work and draws upon the economics of the real estate sector to gain knowledge of their development and valuation. It also examines how urban planning regulates the development of property and value of real estate in the interests of environmental sustainability.

The course allows students to learn about all aspects of property development, valuation and real estate management and to develop a range of technical, communicative and interpersonal skills invaluable to your future career as a chartered surveyor.

Year 1 allows students to study the technical and legal aspects of property, the property market and economics of property development and valuation. Year 2 goes on to study the technical aspects further, along with an introduction to planning and valuation. Year 3 provides an in-depth knowledge of property development appraisal, as well as the valuation and investment appraisal. It also examines how urban planning regulates the development of property and value of real estate. Year 4 focuses on the sustainability of property development and valuation.
 

Graduates can work in the private, public and voluntary sector.

The course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) under the partnership arrangements between the RICS and the University. The number of modules studied is dependant on the exit that you wish to achieve, for example:

  • A Grad Cert is 60 Credits (3 modules)
  • A Cert HE/Grad Dip/ HND is 120 credits (6 modules)
  • A Dip HE credit is 240 credits (12 modules)
  • A Degree is 360 credits (18 modules)
  • An Honours Degree is 480 credits

Please note that some part-time courses give modular exemptions for previous study and vocational experience. Advice is available during application.

Part-time study (per module)

  • A Postgraduate Certificate is 60 credits (3 modules)
  • A Postgraduate Diploma is 120 credits (6 modules)
  • MBA is 180 credits
