This course offers you an advanced qualification in engineering and the opportunity to develop a specialised knowledge of materials engineering. It is one of very few such courses offered at master level in the UK, putting you an advantage over other engineering graduates.

The course covers the core materials topics of metals, polymers, plastics, ceramics and composites, but also explores the progressive areas of forensic engineering and product failure investigation, new and smart materials and use of materials in the generation of energy. You will gain exposure to the latest trends in design, materials, manufacturing processes, testing and advanced applications by taking full advantage of our modern technology and computing facilities.

We have excellent industry links and encourage you to interact with the industry too. All projects are practically focused, with emphasis on using industry standard manufacturing and testing equipment. Plus many of them are live, meaning you will be working for real clients. You will also get an opportunity to undertake an industry placement, which may lead to further employment. Other industry links include case studies, guest lectures and industrial visits.

You will learn the theoretical and practical skills related to current industrial practice in the materials-related industry practice, including design and computer aided engineering skills.

You will also gain valuable transferable skills such as numerical, analytical and presentation skills, research and report writing. Plus the skills related to undertaking an industrially relevant major research project within an engineering company.
