The time is ripe for a generation of scholars and practitioners of acupuncture who are able to reconcile the traditional with the evidence-based approach; navigate different domains of knowledge in a balanced way; compare global perspectives on their discipline and analyse the spectrum of opinion on acupuncture within Oriental and Western cultures. This course has been designed to help you become just such a scholar or practitioner. Your tutors will include experienced practitioners in a variety of healthcare disciplines as well as specialists in the sciences and social sciences.
You will gain a critical insight into the different approaches to health, including the place of alternative medical systems in culturally diverse environments; the development of biomedicine as a cultural system; the biopsychosocial factors which contribute to disease in contemporary society; Five-Element theory and concepts of Qi, Yin-Yang and Jing.
You will study the integration of acupuncture with related disciplines, including modern evidence-based medicine and Western reflexology.
This course will develop your self-awareness and confidence in skills transferable to professional life. You will be able to critically evaluate the bases of beliefs and compare different scientific, ethical and personal positions. You’ll be able to retrieve, analyse and synthesise information in order to formulate arguments effectively, reach valid conclusions and communicate your arguments and conclusions to a variety of audiences. In addition, you will gain transferable skills in problem-solving; using technology in a variety of applications; planning and completing tasks effectively as an individual or a member of a team.
